One way or another, the environment has managed to become a fixation for the general public. Yes, part of this is due to President Obama’s campaign promise to steer the country towards a “green economy”. At the same time, one need only look around for a few feet, pay their utility bill or buy gas for their car to see something needs to be done. As such, one of the fastest growing professions is environmental engineering and the demand for those with a degree in engineering shows no signs of slowing.

High school students interested in this budding profession should understand there is no one absolute method of getting a degree in the field. They should contact the university of their choice, whether on campus or at an online college, to see about the Bachelor’s programs in the already established, yet logically related engineering fields, such as chemical, biochemical, civil, electric/electronic, nuclear, petrochemical or mechanical. Also find out if the school offers courses that help ecological concerns, while taking their four or five year degree program. If you need more information about financial aid, look on the internet.

Now armed with a B.S. in some form of engineering, it’s time to take the important step, a position. Finding a job in a company or agency that is sympathetic is key, if possible. It’s good work-study experience.

From there, it’s time to put in some work. As soon as one can, start making enquiries about going on for a Master’s, preferably in a related field. The way the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts it, a good Aerospace engineer usually started as a mechanical one, then specialized in aerodynamics and other related fields in their post-graduate education. Apply the same principle with an emphasis on green subjects.

Along with a Master’s, another good idea is to get certification from the American Board of Engineering and Technology. As there is no true certification for environmental, it’s probably a good idea to just get the certification in one’s general specialty, knowing that adding the “PE”, Professional Engineering, letters attached to one’s title is a solid calling card.

As it is, where one works will determine how much of an environmental engineer one is. Most of the biggest employers are companies with strong interests in green issues, as well as the government. From there, it gets interesting as car manufacturers and energy companies are now starting to hire as well, for obvious reasons. No matter what, the salary is overall pretty good. A new engineer usually starts at about $55,000 and it can go up to triple that amount to the tops in the field. There is an abundance of information about scholarships and grants on the web.

As for financing the entire affair, there’s more than just the Pell and similar grants. Like any other form of engineering, being an environmental one is open to the National Science Foundation’s S-STEM scholarship. Sit with a college financial aid officer as there are many other scholarships out there, ranging from political organizations like Greenpeace, private charities to sympathetic companies and pro societies.

In the end, not only will you have an online bachelors engineerring degree and a career with solid future potential, but you’ll have one that makes the world more green. Apply for S-STEM and student loans and see what aid is available.

Rising numbers of students have reportedly set out to advance their credentials in a shrunken and increasingly competitive job market, contributing to an increase in master’s degree enrollments, according to Inside Higher Education. And new and expanded master’s university degree programs were being established to accommodate them, the publication last year reported.

Earning a master’s degree could put you in solid company, since rising numbers of adults since the 1990′s have reportedly been obtaining them. In 2006-2007, more than 600,000 master’s degrees were awarded, up 44 percent over those awarded in 1996-1997, National Center for Education Statistics show. The majority of those who received master’s degrees in 2006-2007 were women, and the number of minority graduate students is said to be increasing.

Online degree programs might make it easier for students pursuing master’s degrees to schedule their studies. Online degree programs overall are reportedly growing fast, and students can study for a master’s online between work and family responsibilities and from wherever they have Internet access. Students might also find accelerated online master’s degree programs where they can accomplish their goals in less time than they otherwise would. Earning a bachelors associates degree can also be easier with the help of tuition assistance.

There might especially be incentives for students pursuing online master’s degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects. As a January 2009 article in an educational magazine known as Converge tells it, the Obama administration as well as business groups and state governments have been working to enhance STEM study incentives and programs.

Debra W. Stewart, Council for Graduate Studies President, has been quoted as saying that master’s degree programs train highly skilled science professionals who significantly contribute to the country’s economic competitiveness. STEM careers exist in fields such as nanotechnology, wind and solar energy and space exploration.

Students pursuing online master’s degrees in the STEM subjects have a great variety of programs from which to choose. Professional science, environmental engineering, cybersecurity and bioethics are a few of the online master’s degree programs currently available. And industries in the STEM subject areas are looking for qualified applicants, the Converge article reported.

So far, at least, a low percentage of American college students have been majoring in STEM studies as compared with students in other countries, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. And a National Center for Education Statistics report seems to back this information up. Master’s degree recipients in the United States in 2006-2007 apparently majored most often in education, business and health science degrees, the Center for Education Statistics report suggests. The fewest master’s degrees that year were awarded in mathematics and statistics-and while master’s degrees in security and protective services enjoyed the largest percent increase between 1996-1997 and 2006-2007, master’s degrees in physical sciences and science technologies saw the smallest percent increase, the Center for Education Statistics report shows.

Tuition costs for students interested in pursuing online master’s degrees can be offset by scholarships and fellowships that colleges, universities, organizations and non-profit foundations provide. Students can find fellowships available in the areas of teaching, the humanities, theology, western civilization and more. Some scholarships and fellowships are intended specifically for women and minorities. Students pursuing distance learning masters degree in the STEM subjects might look toward groups such as NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Society for Microbiology and the U.S. Departments of Energy, Defense and Homeland Security for master’s level fellowships.

Grants, scholarships and fellowships are all aids that help the student in the pursuit of their online diploma. With the encouragement being offered for students to enter STEM fields, starting with a bachelor masters degree and working your way up might be one of the most productive courses.

Part of the American Experience is for one nationality or another to emigrate here, have the first generations establish themselves and then have children surpass them through education and better position.

Part of the American Experience is for one nationality or another to emigrate here, have the first generations establish themselves and then have children surpass them through education and better position. No group more epitomizes this ethos today than Asian Americans.

Actually, in the U.S. the term is used to define anyone who traces their ancestry to the continent of Asia, and it’s the largest continent in the world. Its people come from countries as diverse as China (which actually has a number of other cultures inside its national borders, such as Hong Kong and Tibet), India (which as diverse as China), Viet Nam, Singapore and even Pakistan. Polynesians are also lumped into this group, even if places like Hawaii are thousands of miles away from Tokyo. For more informantion on federal pell grant, check the web.

Actually, according to the latest U.S. Census information (2009), the breakdown of Asian Americans are: Chinese (3.53 million), Filipinos (3.05 million), Indians (2.77 million), Vietnamese (1.64 million), Koreans (1.56 million), and Japanese (1.22 million). Other sizable groups are Cambodians/Khmers (206,000), Pakistanis (204,000), Laotians (198,000), Hmong (186,000), and Thais (150,000).

What is also sizeable is the number of Asian Americans, in general, who go on for their Bachelors degree or higher. The overall national average is 27%. Asian Americans average 48% with a Bachelors or higher. On the other hand, nationality does come into play here. For example, Indians have the highest graduation rate with just short of 68%. Chinese (of all ethnic groups) round out the middle with 50%. Laotians and Cambodians tie for the bottom at 5%.

What is universal is any Asian American should fill out their FASFA form and apply for a Pell grant. This is available for all Americans. Serious consideration should also be given to various scholarships, which tend to only look at grades and outside achievements, not what country one’s parents come from. Any good online college has financial aid officer can be of great service here. If you are looking for more information on free scholarships and grants, you can research the internet.

Where an Asian American’s specific ethnicity really comes into play is through financial aid from private and corporate institutions. Asian Americans have set up many funds for their specific nationality. For instance, the Korean American Scholarship Fund awarded 59 scholarships in 2009 alone, in majors ranging from music to psychology. Their website, also includes a page with other such organizations offering more financial aid and grants. Not to be outdone, the Indian American Scholarship Fund awarded 25 one, two and four-year grants…just in the state of Georgia.

The best way to get this assistance is to make multiple copies of your FASFA application, grades, letters of recommendation (for scholarships) and/or your own and/or parent’s financial records (for grants). From there, go to the phone book or a site such as Google, type in your nationality of origins and then “college financial aid.” Skip anyone who wants to sell you a book listing all these groups, you already have an even bigger list, and it didn’t cost you anything, either.

So what do all these factors have to do with getting free scholarships and grantsto go to an online college? Actually quite a lot. An Asian American’s nationality can play heavily for pell grants outside the usual federal and state routes.
