Xanax is a benzodiazepine drug that is used by doctors for treatment of those that suffer from disorders and anxiety. Sometimes it’s also used for curing insomnia or those that suffer from acute agitation. The drug should only used by those for whom it’s been prescribed.
The Xanax tablets should be taken 2-3 times a day. The recommended dosage is 0.25 mg – 0.5 mg. Dosage may be adjusted by the doctor in case the side effects are too much and a person has trouble adjusting to the drug. It is usually prescribed for those that have anxiety disorder and panic disorder.
As with any other drug, those that take the drug may experience some side effects. However, it’s not necessary that all those that consume the drug will experience side effects. If there are severe side effects, the doctor may alter or change the dosage according to requirement.
Some of the most common side effects that may be experienced by users are drowsiness, fatigue and tiredness, some coordination problems, irritability, memory problems, increase in appetite and many more. Other side effects can also happen to individuals. Some people also experience sexual disinterest, while women may experience problems with their menstrual cycle as well as increase in weight.
If you have some existing medical conditions, then these should be intimated to the doctor before the start of the drug therapy. Conditions will include kidney diseases, lung problems including breathing problem and allergies to food or even benzodiazepine, but won’t be restricted to these. If you are expecting a baby, or are planning to have a baby, then this drug shouldn’t be taken.
Since other drugs, medications and supplements can also react with this medicine, it’s important to tell the doctor whether you are taking these or not. This medication just like other benzodiazepine is also a controlled drug. This is because many people abuse the drug for drug addiction. Those that have had a case history of drug or alcohol addiction are also forbidden to take the drug.
The problem with the drug is that a person can get addicted to it. This is the case of those people that take the drug in higher dosages for a long period of time. Even those that need to stop taking the drug should do so under the doctor’s guidance. Else the withdrawal symptoms can be extremely bad.
Drowsiness is one of the side effects of this drug. For this reason, a person shouldn’t operate heavy machinery or drive after taking the drug. Elderly patients that are taking the drug should be careful after they have taken the drug as they may fall and hurt themselves.
