Kitchens Need To Be Efficient As Well As Pleasant
Most cooks find it frustrating to try to work in kitchens which are cluttered or arranged poorly. A well thought out kitchen arrangement has an organized flow to the work. This increases efficiency and saves time and effort.
Work flow should be smooth and continuous. If you are constantly having to cross back and forth, your kitchen is not designed or arranged at optimum. For instance, to prepare a dish you should be able to retrieve the needed ingredients from the refrigerator and then the cabinet with only a step or two. If your refrigerator is on one side of the room, the cabinet on the other, and your work counter on yet another, you are wasting time and energy.
Consider how you cook when planning a kitchen or considering where to place items in the cabinets. If you tend to add spices directly to the pot, keeping the spices on a rack across the room is a waste of time. Place them near the range for easy access.
Use your most accessible cabinets for dishes you use every day. If you have china that is only used once or twice a year or a massive soup pot that is even more rarely used, store them in a pantry. If you do not have a pantry, use bottom cabinets or those with inconvenient access.
Cluttered counters are not only unsightly but make it harder to work. Replace items as soon as you are through with them. Leaving just a couple of items each day on a counter top quickly creates a messy kitchen without any work area. If you have appliances that you do not use often, like food processors, juicers, or blenders, clean them and store them away in your pantry.
Put away clean dishes as soon as the dishwasher is finished. Load the dirty dishes as soon as they are soiled to avoid stacks in your sink. As you cook, rinse spoons and bowls and place in the dishwasher to save time on clean up. If possible, teach other family members to add their dirty dishes to the dishwasher instead of placing them in the sink or on a counter top for you to handle.
Much activity takes place in the kitchen, but you should not let items migrate to kitchen counters that should not be there. Bills, games, and homework papers need a designated area. But that area does not need to be the counter you will need to stir up cake batter or dice some onions for meat loaf.
Do not forget to decorate your kitchen just as well as you decorated the rest of the house. Some kitchens do not have much space to hang items on the wall, but there are still things you can do. A plant ledge not used for greenery can hold decorative items, including mugs and plates. Figurines can sometimes find a home on a window ledge. Attractive dish towels, appliance covers, or pot holders can also provide a colorful touch.
