Simple Steps to Host an Amazing Outdoor Movie Night for Your Community, While on a Tight Budget

by James Rodger

Over the past 5 years there has been an increase in the number of professionally run outdoor cinemas in major cities but what has been really interesting in the last 2 years is the significant increase of smaller locally run outdoor movie events. The professionally run cinemas have huge budgets and need big crowds to make a profit every summer but the smaller community run movie nights, which are popping up in all sorts of locations, can be put on for an audience as little as 100 people.

With the option to host a movie night for less than $1000 for groups under 200 people, more communities are beginning to see that organising such an event at their local park is now possible.

The other great trend that is starting to happen with communities who have run one movie night and had success is they are so impressed with the funds they were able to raise and how it united the community that they are now organising not just one event a year but 2 or 3.

Searching the web for an event company to assist you with your outdoor movie event is your initial step. Though there are only a small number of companies that offer this service they seem to have already secured a large percentage of the market as almost all groups that are using them have booked another event with the same company for the following year.

By providing a huge inflatable screen, AV equipment and fundraising advice community groups are not only blown away with how exciting and crowd pleasing the night is but how simple it is to raise money for an important cause whilst enabling the whole community to come together to support each other.

Before you start marketing your event you do need to consider the following issues:

1. Where will the movie night be held

2. Double check that the area is large enough for both equipment and audience

3. Who do I need to obtain permission from to host a night (e.g. council, school, etc.)

4. Contact an Outdoor Events company that specialises in Outdoor Movies

5. Select a film to be played

6. Publicize the event via local media

Still sounding a bit too technical? Remember that by hiring an events company you can lean on them to ensure the correct equipment is used, including; what size inflatable screen, how many lumens the projector should have, how loud should the audio system be and all safety requirements are met.

Finally, the last question people are always concerned about ” what if it rains? This is an issue but if you run your event in the dryer months (Sept – May) then the chances of being rained out are much smaller. Secondly you may also want to consider having an indoor alternative just incase the flood gates open and threaten to ruin all your tireless planning. If all else fails the majority of event companies will let you reschedule your event as long as you call off the night by 10am on the day.
